Dr. Arrvind Raghunath, a McLeod Oncologist, explains the huge advancements in cancer treatments that are shaping care differently every day.
Cancer treatment has undergone a seismic shift in the past decade, moving beyond traditional methods like chemotherapy to more precise, personalized approaches. These innovations such as targeted therapy and immunotherapy are not only improving survival rates but also enhancing the quality of life for patients.
What Is Targeted Therapy and Why Is It So Effective?
Targeted therapy is a game-changer in the world of oncology. Unlike chemotherapy, which attacks all rapidly dividing cells (healthy or cancerous), targeted therapy goes after specific genetic mutations that fuel cancer growth. These mutations have only been understood in recent years, thanks to major advances in genetic research.
“We can precisely target those mutations and stop the cancer from growing — as opposed to giving someone chemotherapy, which basically attacks every cell in the body and produces more side effects that cause patients to be sick,” explains Dr. Arrvind Raghunath, a McLeod Oncologist.
Dr. Raghunath says these mutations were not able to be identified and targeted until very recently, “in the last five to 10 years.”
How Immunotherapy Is Revolutionizing Cancer Treatment
Another powerful tool in modern cancer care is immunotherapy. This treatment empowers a patient’s own immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells.
“Immunotherapy has been revolutionary in cancers like lung cancer and breast cancer — offering positive responses in patients and even when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body we can achieve a duration of remission for a long period of time,” said Dr. Raghunath.
Though there can be side effects — since the immune system may also attack healthy cells in rare instances — these are generally manageable.
The Critical Role of Research in Improving Survival
Behind every treatment breakthrough is years of meticulous research. Dr. Raghunath emphasized how fast the field is evolving: “There are three to four new drug approvals for various types of cancer every month. What wasn’t available last year is saving lives this year.”
Research not only leads to new therapies but also helps doctors tailor treatments based on the cancer’s unique characteristics. It is this precision medicine approach that is transforming outcomes for patients.
Making Cancer Care Accessible: The Hope Fund
Innovation means little if it’s not accessible. This is where McLeod’s HOPE (Helping Oncology Patients Everyday) Fund steps in.
The HOPE Fund is fueled from donations given by various people in the community, as well as the physicians at McLeod, to support the McLeod Cancer Clinic and “provide accessible care to vulnerable patients in our community,” Dr. Raghunath said.
The initiative ensures that uninsured or financially struggling patients receive essential cancer care at no cost. “This is one of the major programs in the state of South Carolina and has been part of our large success with regards to cancer outcomes in Florence County and the adjacent counties,” he said.
Thanks to targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and ongoing research, the landscape of cancer care is more hopeful than ever. Combined with donor support programs like the HOPE Fund, these advancements at McLeod are not just treating cancer – they are transforming lives.
