The Pediatric EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment & Healing) Unit at McLeod Children’s Hospital provides rapid assessment and crisis care in a calm, pediatric-focused environment for children and adolescents experiencing behavioral or psychiatric emergencies.
CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS:
Patient safety is our top priority. Because EmPATH is an open environment, participants must be able to engage safely in care without posing a risk to others.
How is the EmPATH Unit different from an Emergency Room?
The EmPATH Unit is a quiet, secure, pediatric-focused space for mental and emotional health designed to reduce the stress of a typical ER.
Do we need an appointment or referral?
No appointment is needed. Families can come through the McLeod Emergency Department 24/7. Referrals from pediatricians, school counselors, or therapists are welcome.
How long is a typical stay?
Stay length varies. Many children return home within 4–48 hours with an outpatient plan. Some may require short-term inpatient care if recommended.
How can parents or guardians participate with their child?
Families can join care planning, receive updates, and stay for portions of the visit. Some interactions require private time with the care team.
What ages does the Pediatric EmPATH Unit serve?
Children and teens under 18 years old.
Is the unit secure?
Yes. The unit is locked and follows strict safety protocols.
Who is on the care team?
The team includes Nurses, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioners, Psychiatrists, Child Life Specialists, and Social Workers.
