The Pediatric EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment & Healing) Unit at McLeod Children’s Hospital provides rapid assessment and crisis care in a calm, pediatric-focused environment for children and adolescents experiencing behavioral or psychiatric emergencies. 

  • Who Does The EmPATH Unit Benefit? 

    CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: 

    • experiencing a severe or sudden worsening of anxiety or depression 
    • having suicidal thoughts or engaging in self-harm 
    • in an acute behavioral or emotional crisis 
    • struggling with acute stress related to trauma 

    Patient safety is our top priority. Because EmPATH is an open environment, participants must be able to engage safely in care without posing a risk to others.

  • Our Goal & Approach 

    • Deliver timely, coordinated care connecting patients with needed medical, psychiatric, and social support resources. 
    • Provide immediate stabilization and therapeutic support in a safe, calming environment focused on de-escalating crisis. 
    • Develop a safe, individualized discharge plan that ensures appropriate next steps—whether inpatient, outpatient, or intensive outpatient care.
  • What Patients Can Expect

    • TRIAGE • All patients first evaluated in the Emergency Department to determine EmPATH suitability, then escorted to the unit for care. 
    • ASSESSMENT • A psychiatric provider conducts a comprehensive mental health assessment and develops an individualized care plan.
    • STABILIZATION AND SUPPORT • Therapeutic activities, crisis intervention, and medical care are provided in a calm, sensory-friendly environment. 
    • CARE PLANNING • Collaborative plan for next steps – outpatient therapy, community resources, or inpatient care if needed.

    How is the EmPATH Unit different from an Emergency Room?
    The EmPATH Unit is a quiet, secure, pediatric-focused space for mental and emotional health designed to reduce the stress of a typical ER. 

    Do we need an appointment or referral?
    No appointment is needed. Families can come through the McLeod Emergency Department 24/7. Referrals from pediatricians, school counselors, or therapists are welcome.

    How long is a typical stay?
    Stay length varies. Many children return home within 4–48 hours with an outpatient plan. Some may require short-term inpatient care if recommended.

    How can parents or guardians participate with their child?
    Families can join care planning, receive updates, and stay for portions of the visit. Some interactions require private time with the care team.

    What ages does the Pediatric EmPATH Unit serve?
    Children and teens under 18 years old.

    Is the unit secure?
    Yes. The unit is locked and follows strict safety protocols.

    Who is on the care team?
    The team includes Nurses, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioners, Psychiatrists, Child Life Specialists, and Social Workers.
