Ken Shranko with McLeod Physician Associates gives the gift of life during a recent McLeod Health-sponsored American Red Cross Blood Drive.

McLeod Health sponsors blood drives throughout the year in Florence, Darlington, Dillon, Cheraw, Manning, Loris and the North Myrtle Beach area.

Due to a decrease in donations this Summer, the South Carolina Division of the American Red Cross reports that they urgently need to collect 200 donations a day. Those who can donate type O blood are especially in demand because it’s the first blood type to be depleted from hospitals during a shortage. Emergency Departments use type O negative when there isn’t time to determine the correct blood type during an emergency.
