Physician Educates Mall Walkers About Colon Health

McLEOD LORIS 21 MARCH 2014

(3/7/2014)   Colon health and colon related issues, were the topics for the March meeting of the Mall Walkers Club at Myrtle Beach Mall last week. The guest speaker for the meeting held Tuesday, March 4, was Dr. David Johnson of McLeod Internal Medicine Seacoast.

Dr. Johnson discussed the role of the colon and the importance of good colon health. He explained how early intervention, such as colonoscopies, can be key in identifying and successfully treating colon related health conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, colon cancer, polyps and Diverticulitis.

He indicated that there are a number of symptoms that may indicate colon health issues. Although they can also be associated with other problems, you should share with your doctor symptoms such as chest pain, heartburn, constipation, bloating and/or excessive gas, stomach pain and/or cramps, difficulty swallowing, nausea, rectal bleeding, diarrhea or changes in bowel habits.

According to Dr. Johnson, the same healthy lifestyle habits most experts recommend for general good health apply equally to obtaining and maintaining good colon health.

• Drink plenty of water and other caffeine-free fluids
• Drink caffeine and alcohol in moderation
• Do not smoke
• Get regular exercise
• Eat a balanced diet that is high in fiber
