Physician Discusses Lung Health with Mall Walkers

McLEOD LORIS 15 APRIL 2014

(4/11/2014)  Lung health was the topic of the April meeting of the Mall Walkers Club at Myrtle Beach Mall last week. The guest speaker for the meeting held Tuesday, April 8, was Dr. Carol Young of McLeod Pulmonary and Critical Care Seacoast.

Dr. Young discussed lung health and lung related issues such as lung cancer, COPD, asthma, allergies, emphysema, and pulmonary disease. While COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, after heart disease, cancer and stroke, he indicated that the lungs are very strong and, if taken good care of, generally do not have many problems.

According to Dr. Young, lung disease ranges from bronchitis and pneumonia to pulmonary hypertension. Lung function tests and X-rays are used to diagnosis most lung-related illnesses and many symptoms can be eased with proper treatment.

He discussed factors that affect lung health such as air pollutants and other environmental issues and stressed the importance of quitting smoking to try to avoid lung related diseases and ensure better lung health in the future.
