1) Degree: A minimum of a graduate degree from a USDE-recognized accredited institution (or equivalent).

2) Nutrition-Related Coursework: Complete one of the ACEND-accredited programs for coursework (DPD, CP, or GP).

6) Maintain credential by completing ongoing professional development to stay updated on latest research and evidence-based guidelines.

Note: Some ACEND programs include a master’s degree, while other students complete their undergraduate in an accredited dietetics program and earn a master’s degree in another field. A master’s degree is required to be eligible for the RDN examination. See Become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (eatright.org) and Commission on Dietetic Registration (cdrnet.org) for more information.

Most states regulate dietetics practice, necessitating licensure within that state prior to practicing dietetics. Program graduates should check licensing laws in the state in which they intend to practice and can visit www.cdrnet.org/LicensureMap and/or visit the state’s licensing boards/website for state-specific information. South Carolina, where our program is located, requires practitioners to be licensed and additional information can be found here: SCLLR
