  • Centering Helps Expecting Mothers Develop Skills

Centering Pregnancy®, is a new approach to prenatal visits where 8 to 12 women with similar due dates meet for 2-hour

CenteringPregnancy® is a way for expecting mothers to share learning and experiences with other pregnant women and to be involved in their own care. Centering brings patients out of the exam room and into a group setting, where they develop skills and confidence to take control of their health.

    Each session generally includes:

    • Weight and blood pressure self-monitoring.
    • Prenatal checkup with a doctor.
    • Meeting in a circle with time to talk with the other women and get to know them.

A variety of topics are discussed each session, including:

    • Nutrition and other healthy lifestyle choices.
    • Changes in your body during pregnancy.
    • Mental relaxation techniques.
    • Breathing, medications for labor and birth.
    • Breastfeeding.
    • The newborn’s first days.
    • Physical and emotional adjustments after the delivery.

The Centering Pregnancy® model offers many benefits to the mother and her infant. Mothers will:

    • Learn more about pregnancy.
    • Be better prepared for the birth of your baby.
    • Familiarize yourself with caring for your baby.
    • Understand how to take a more active role in your own health care.
    • Experience plenty of time with your doctor.
    • Have the sessions covered by your health insurance as a prenatal visit without additional cost.

Centering participants experienced fewer visits to the Emergency Department during their third trimester and a lower incidence of preterm births. Women said they felt greater satisfaction with their care and more prepared for labor and birth. They also reported a higher breastfeeding rate, a practice that is now encouraged for its benefits to the infant.

Most health insurance covers CenteringPregnancy®, recognizing it as a prenatal care option and requiring no additional cost to participants.
