Neuroscience is a medical phrase that’s not as well-known as others.  Basically, it deals with issues of the brain and nervous system. McLeod Neurosurgeon Dr. William Naso explains the benefits of a strong Neurosciences Program.

The benefit of the expansion of our Neuroscience services at McLeod is enormous for our community. We have a large population of patients that have neurovascular disorders, stroke and hypertension, which can lead to hemorrhage in the brain.
 
The expansion of Neurosciences services, particularly the expansion of the treatment of stroke and aneurysm hemorrhage, is huge for our community. This region of South Carolina is known as the stroke belt. It’s one of the areas in the country with the highest incidence of stroke, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. We have a significant amount of patients in our area that have stroke and hypertensive hemorrhage or hemorrhage in the brain. These are patients that we are supposed to serve.

It’s important for people to understand that the Neurosciences initiative at McLeod is an amazing contingent of physicians, nurses, other healthcare professionals, and an administrative team, all working together for one goal — to improve the care of patients with neurological and neurosurgical disorders.
 
The expansion of the McLeod Neurosciences Program not only advances the management of neurology and neurosurgical patients, but it will also really improve what we’re already doing by meeting the needs of these patients with stroke or hemorrhages. I think we will see a lot of improvement.
