Stroke Survivor Helps Raise Awareness of Signs and Symptoms

(5/31/11) - About 795,000 Americans will suffer a stroke this year, yet most people in the U.S. cannot identify stroke warning signs or risk factors. Many strokes – some studies indicate that up to 80 percent – can be prevented through risk factor management.

There is no doubt that more education about stroke is needed. According to the National Stroke Association, public awareness of stroke warning signs and risk factors has not improved during the past five years.

New Support Group for Patients with Leukemia and Lymphoma

(5/26/11) - A new support group for patients with blood cancers is being offered in Florence. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and McLeod Health will host the first meeting of this monthly support group on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at noon at the McLeod Health & Fitness Center. (5/25/11) - McLeod Children's Hospital will host a Parade of Miracles on Friday, June 3 to kick-off the Children's Miracle Network Celebration Broadcast. The parade begins at the Irby Street Wal-Mart Supercenter at 4:30 p.m. It will proceed down Irby Street, turn right at Cheves Street, and conclude at the McLeod Medical Plaza.

Students Donate Art to McLeod Pediatric Associates of Florence

(5/20/11) - McLeod Pediatric Associates of Florence received a colorful donation of artwork to their West Florence location. Fifteen National Art Honor Society students at Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology in Darlington, South Carolina, collaboratively created five acrylic-on-canvas works inspired by popular children's books.

"We are very appreciative for the artwork," remarked pediatrician Dr. Brian Naylor. "It encourages reading and also makes kids excited about art....

(5/17/11) - Eighty percent of strokes are preventable, yet it is expected that nearly 795,000 people in the United States will have a stroke this year. On average, someone has a stroke every 40 seconds.
