Safe Kids Pee Dee/Coastal Urges Parents to Practice Summer Fire Safety

(7/10/12) - The summer months are a time when families enjoy doing a variety of activities outdoors; however, it's also when barbecue grills can cause devastating residential fires and serious injuries to children. According to the United States Fire Administration, each year almost 5,000 Americans are injured by charcoal/wood-burning and propane grill fires.

Statistics show the majority of grill fires on residential properties occur in the four months of May through August.

The most recent available data shows that in 2010, an estimated 3,400 children ages 15 and under had injuries involving fireworks. Children and teenagers are the most likely people to be injured as a result of consumer fireworks.

(6/22/12) - Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children. Home swimming pools are the most common place for a child younger than age 5 to drown. Approximately 400 children age 14 and younger drown each year in pools and spas, and most children were being watched by an adult just before they drowned.
