  5 and 10K Challenge Run/Walk

 
 

The McLeod Sports Medicine 5K and 10K Challenge Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, March 24, 2007. The event is designed for both competitive and recreational athletes.

Included in the McLeod Sports Medicine Challenge are the following divisions: Fun Walk/Run Mile, 5K Walk, 5K Run, 10K Run, 5K Wheelchair, 10K Wheelchair and 1 Mile Pet Walk.

All races are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. at Briggs Elementary School, located at 1012 Congaree Drive, Florence. Race day registration will take place from 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration is available until March 9, 2007.

Free Family Activities will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and include a Clown, Moonwalk, Face Painting, Strong Man Strikers and more.

The Run/Walk course is USA Track and Field Certified. Race technical direction is managed by Race Management Systems, Inc., who has previously provided race direction for both the Mens and Womens 1996 Olympic Trials, the Womens 2000 Olympic Marathon Trials, and the Observer Race Festival from 1996 to 2001.

Prizes, sponsored by Best Buy, will be awarded to the top three overall Male and Female winners. Prizes to overall winners include first place $100, second place $50 and third place $25. A $100 cash bonus will be awarded to the male or female who sets a new course record. Medals will be awarded for each age division. 

Race proceeds benefit the Geoffrey Kier Memorial Athletic Excellence Award Scholarship Fund. The Geoffrey Kier Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to four college-bound high school senior athletes who exhibit excellence in academics, athletics, and also possess strong leadership skills. Male and female athletes are selected from participating area public and private high schools.
