Mrs. Jean Evans was diagnosed with Lung Cancer on February 20, 2007. She was referred to the Cancer Clinic for treatment and began receiving radiation and chemotherapy. A month passed by when Mrs. Evans came to the clinic requesting help. She couldn’t pay all of her bills, and had been having a very difficult time finding someone to help her. Through the efforts of Sharon James, the Clinic Coordinator, and myself, the Social Worker for Cancer Services, Mrs. Evans was referred to all of the available resources. Although we were not able to meet all of her needs, we were able to offer her some temporary relief.
Mrs. Evans is a very soft-spoken, kind and gentle, woman. She always has a smile on her face, even through her tears.
Thankfully, the McLeod Foundation helps our cancer patients by supporting programs such as LIFT (Loving Initiative for Transportation) and MVP (Meal Voucher Program). Mrs. Evans received assistance through both programs.
These programs provide support service for the patients of the region’s only Cancer Clinic available to patients with few resources. The LIFT program pays for the mileage of volunteer drivers or for gas vouchers to ensure that patients who have no transportation can receive their life saving cancer treatments. The MVP Program provides meal vouchers to the hospital cafeteria for days when patients must spend long hours in treatment and have no resources for purchasing a meal. The LIFT Program and the MVP program are funded by grants from the McLeod Foundation. These funds are available because of generous donors who want to help provide care for cancer patients.
