Heart disease is a diagnosis seen too often in our region. McLeod Health plays a vital role the treatment of those who are faced with the disease.
Cardiac Rehabilitation is the recommended therapy for individuals after a heart attack or cardiac intervention. This treatment is crucial not only for the obvious physical benefits, but also for the education patients receive, as well as, the opportunity to interact with others who have similar experiences.
Many of the patients involved do not exercise at home due to fear or lack of motivation. As patients progress through the program, they gain more independence and security with a scheduled exercise routine.
Patients with doctor’s orders participate in Cardiac Rehabilitation three times a week on an outpatient basis. During their visit, patients are exposed to cardiac monitoring, daily blood pressure and pulse monitoring while performing their exercise routine.
The McLeod Cardiac Rehabilitation program provides assistance to patients as they transition from Phase II to Phase III of their cardiac treatment. While training, patients learn how to maintain a regular routine. Patients are strongly encouraged to continue these healthy habits after completion of the program. Community education is also part of the Cardiac Rehabilitation program in which members of a high-risk area are exposed to heart healthy information.
The McLeod Foundation provides funding for patients in need of financial assistance for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase II and Phase III programs at both our Florence facility, located at the McLeod Health & Fitness Center, and McLeod Medical Center Dillon.
In order to be considered for financial assistance, patients must express the desire to continue with Cardiac Rehabilitation. They must show a consistency in past performance in the first phase and receive a staff consensus, as well as, a proven financial need signed by the client.
Patients who participate in Cardiac Rehabilitation traditionally feel healthier and better about themselves. Performing daily activities becomes easier for them. Many express their gratitude for the opportunity to improve their health by utilizing this program
“I am so thankful for this program,” said Alice Short, a Cardiac Rehabilitation patient in Dillon. “It has been very helpful to me. I feel so much better being on a regular exercise routine.” Alice, who suffers from angina, or chest pain, has been participating in Cardiac Rehabilitation since 2003.
The McLeod Foundation awards grants to enhance the quality of care McLeod Health provides to the community throughout the region and beyond.
