- Decentralized duties include:
- Pharmacotherapy recommendations to physicians
- Parenteral nutrition support service (adult)
- Pharmacokinetic consults
- Renal dosing service
- Medication reconciliation
- Drug information
- Patient education programs
- In-service Education
- Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee
- Clinical Effectiveness Committee
- Medication Safety Committee
- Student precepting from multiple schools of pharmacy, including the South Carolina College of Pharmacy, University of Georgia, Wingate University, Campbell University, Mercer University, and South University.
- Teaching and rounding with attending physicians and medical residents
Clinical Training
Residents will spend the majority of their time involved in clinical activities such as:
- Direct patient care services
- Nutrition and pharmacokinetic consultations
- Pharmacy practice management
- Developing critical interdisciplinary relationships
- Research
Pharmacy Journal Club
Residents and pharmacists will participate in journal club presentations of recently published or landmark clinical trials.
Pharmacy Continuing Education Seminars
The pharmacy department coordinates continuing education programs for pharmacists, physicians, and nurses throughout the year. Each resident will be responsible for two presentations during a 12-month period. The second presentation must meet ACPE requirements.
Residency Project
Residents will be responsible for the design and completion of a research project approved by the institution’s Investigational Review Board. Topics must be relevant to clinical practice and of publishable quality. Opportunities to present results at a local, state, or national meeting are provided.
Medication Use Evaluation
Residents will complete a medication use evaluation (MUE) throughout the year. The goal is to help residents learn how to develop a systematic process designed to determine and maintain appropriate and effective use of medications.
Additional Training Opportunities
Residents are required to be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Residents will be scheduled prior to ACLS for an EKG training class. All certification requirements will be scheduled during orientation month to be completed when classes are available.
Teaching Certificate Program
Residents may choose to participate in a longitudinal Academician Preparation Program (APP) through the South Carolina College of Pharmacy to enhance their teaching, precepting, lecturing, and mentoring skills.
Pharmacy Student Clinical Clerkships
MRMC is committed to the educational training of future pharmacists. Currently, we serve as a teaching site for several colleges of pharmacy. Residents can assist preceptors with second and fourth year pharmacy students during selected months throughout the year. Responsibilities often include, but are not limited to: topic discussions, small group facilitation, presentation evaluations, and patient case reviews. Didactic teaching opportunities are available based upon the resident’s interest and experience.
Hours
Duty hours vary depending on the rotation. Staffing requirements for the program includes an evening shift every other week and working approximately one out of every three weekends. Residents will be scheduled a day off prior to their weekend. Staffing one major and one minor holiday shift in the inpatient pharmacy is required during the 12-month period.
Graduation and Certification
Upon successful completion of the PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency, graduates will receive a Certificate of Completion from MRMC.
